Zoos In Edinburgh Scotland: Scottish National Zoological Park

It may seem strange to visit a zoo in a foreign city - the animals are all the same, are they not? Yet the environment created by different groups makes for a whole other experience. One such example is the Edinburgh Zoo. Located in Scotland's capital, it is the forefront of zoos in Edinburgh.
As if that were not enough to be renowned locally, Edinburgh Zoo is recognized around the world as one of the best for its treatment of animals. As the Scottish National Zoological Park, it prides itself on treating its inhabitants with the respect they deserve, thus making for a richer experience for its visitors.
The Edinburgh Zoo is owned by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and was opened in July of 1913. Its mission statement as posted on the website is, "to inspire and excite our visitors with the wonder of living animals, and so to promote the conservation of threatened species and habitats." It does so by working in conjunction with other zoos and conservation agencies across the world, including the United Kingdom. The coordinated conservation programs allows Edinburgh Zoo to thrive. Some of the campaigns it takes part in include Save the Rhino, Atlantic Rainforest, 21st Century Tiger, and Scotland's Everyone organization.
Apart from being active in conservation efforts for zoos in Edinburgh and around the globe, the Edinburgh Zoo raises awareness about animals for its visitors and conservationist. They do so through education programs for people on their responsibility and how to help the animals. The zoo also supports research projects that help understand the animals' behavioral and psychological needs. The Scottish National Zoological Park covers all bases in terms of the education of wildlife.
The Edinburgh Zoo covers 82 acres and is situated three miles west of the city's center. It inhabits more than 1,000 animals, drawing more than 650,000 visitors annually. Its most popular and famous exhibit is the world's largest penguin pool. Other popular activities are a fountain filled maze and a free hilltop safari trailer that takes visitors to the top of a hill. For meals, there are numerous kiosks on the grounds for people to frequent, as well as the Mansion House. It dates from 1973 and allows guests to kick back and relax with a full waitress service.
Open everyday of the year at 9 a.m., Edinburgh Zoo closes at 6 p.m. April-September; 5 p.m. in October and March; and at 4:30 p.m November-February. The admission prices for 2007 are as follows: £10.50 for adults, £7.50 for children between 3-14 years of age, free for kids under the age of 3, and £8.00 for a concession ticket with an ID. Family tickets are available, as well as discount party tickets for groups of 10 or more. Member's guests pay a smaller fee, and all the admission prices include a voluntary donation to the zoo's Budongo Chimpanzee project.
Even though it may seem every zoo is the same, they are not. The Scottish National Zoological Park understands the important and fragility of wildlife. For that reason, the Edinburgh Zoo gives back to the animal community and fosters an interest in its visitors. The many exhibits and events at Edinburgh Zoo gives tourists and native residents alike an inspiring look at earth's creatures, one that many people are not going to forget.
