Toledo Zoo: Ohio Zoo Animals, White Lions And Butterfly Conservation

One of these cities where people can venture to a zoo to see some of the world's most beautiful nature exhibits and intriguing zoo animals is Toledo, Ohio. Toledo offers one of the nicest displays of nature around in the Toledo Zoo.
Located on the south side of Ohio, the zoo was first opened in 1900 by the Park's Board of Toledo. The Toledo Zoo is home to over 4,800 animals and has over 51 acres of land to its credit. In the past decade, the zoo has grown in popularity because of renovated buildings and wide variety of popular exhibits. For these reasons it has been referred to as America's Most Complete Zoo. The annual attendance of the Toledo Zoo is set at 875,000 visitors a year, with it reaching on million visitors three times in its history.
Some of the major accomplishments of the Toledo Zoo include being the first zoo in the world to have a hippoquarium, where they bred hippos and had the zoo animals on display for visitors. It is also the only place in the world where the Kihansi Spray Toad is on display.
The Toledo Zoo also participates in one of the best zoological programs known as the Species Survival Plans. These plans take in endangered animals and offer them homes and breeding so they can survive without the threat of becoming extinct in the wild. Being in zoos such as the Toledo Zoo is one of the only ways to keep these endangered animals safe and living a safe, healthy lifestyle. Currently, the zoo is home to over 30 of these Species Survival Plans.
Some of the rarest zoo animals which the Toledo Zoo continues to breed in their Species Survival Plans are white lions. In fact, the Toledo Zoo is one of two places in which these rare lions can been seen in America; the other being the Cincinnati Zoo. For people who truly want to see once in a lifetime wild animals, the Toledo Zoo offers this opportunity with their white lions.
One of the most unique offerings the Toledo Zoo has is the botanical garden that includes butterfly conservation. This Ziems conservation house is a beautiful Victorian style glass house packed with plants from all around the world, such as bromeliads and ferns. The butterfly section offers a peaceful experience where people can go to watch butterflies hover over specially picked plants. This garden has earned the Toledo Zoo a spot on the Butterfly Conservation Initiative.
The Toledo Zoo is a place that offers a once in a lifetime experience for people interested in wildlife they will not find anywhere else. On top of the thousands of animals they have on display, they also offer rare white lions, and one of the most beautiful butterfly conservation houses in America.
